Similar to the ESTA process for USA, Great Britain has introduced an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for people who were previously able to enter the UK without a visa.
An ETA approval is mandatory:
- for a stay of up to 6 months to travel to the UK for tourism, visiting family/friends, business or study purposes
- for transit through the United Kingdom - only if you go through British border control
This applies to every person traveling including children and babies.
Necessary documents for application:
- 1 current passport photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm (min. 600 x 750 pixels)) not older than 3 months.

The processing time formulated by the British authorities is 3 working days.
In individual cases, if further checks are carried out, an ETA approval may also take longer.

Applicants will receive an email confirmation once their application is approved.
An ETA is valid for 2 years for multiple entries and is electronically linked to the passport used to apply. If the validity of the passport is less than 2 years, the validity of the ETA automatically expires with the passport.
Travelers must either use an ePassport gate if they are eligible to do so or see a Border Force officer to enter the UK upon arrival in the UK.
