Similar to the ESTA process for USA, Great Britain will gradually introduce an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) from October 25, 2023 for people who were previously able to enter the UK without a visa.
An ETA approval will be mandatory:
- for a stay of up to 6 months to travel to the UK for tourism, visiting family/friends, business or study purposes
- for transit through the United Kingdom - even if you do not go through British border control
This applies to every person traveling including children and babies.
Applicants will receive an email confirmation once their application is approved.
An ETA is valid for 2 years for multiple entries and is electronically linked to the passport used to apply. If the validity of the passport is less than 2 years, the validity of the ETA automatically expires with the passport.
Travelers must either use an ePassport gate if they are eligible to do so or see a Border Force officer to enter the UK upon arrival in the UK.
The mandatory introduction of the ETA begins gradually according to citizenship/nationality as follows:
Citizens of Qatar:
For entry into the UK on or after November 15, 2023. Applications can be submitted from October 25, 2023.
Citizens of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates:
For entry on or after February 22, 2024. Applications can be submitted from February 1, 2024.
For citizens of the European Union, USA, Canada etc. (see link below), the ETA requirement will also be introduced in 2024.
